Looking at it in detail shows hose number 3 coming from the engine and connects to the additional pump which then goes through hose number 2 to the main valve body. The valve is a butterfly where it directs the incoming water to either the left or right port. If no vacuum directs water to the right port, that is one of the heater hoses and the left port would be the return to the engine.
