WebMar 18, 2024 · There are many key differences between redback spiders in black widow spiders. The redback spider is smaller on average than the black widow spider. While both of these spiders have glossy black bodies, the redback spider features brown males, while all black widow spiders are black. Phidippus johnsoni, the red-backed jumping spider, is one of the largest and most commonly encountered jumping spiders of western North America. It is not to be confused with the unrelated and highly venomous redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti).
